The perfect appetizer for tomato season: Heirloom Tomato & Burrata.
This dish beautifully showcases sliced heirloom tomatoes, highlighting their vibrant colors and unique shapes. Topped with fragrant fresh basil, a sprinkle of Maldon salt, a drizzle of high-quality olive oil, and a hint of red pepper flakes, it offers a delightful combination of flavors that are both simple and satisfying.
You can enjoy it with just a knife and fork, allowing the fresh ingredients to speak for themselves. However, it also pairs wonderfully with crostini or a fresh baguette, making it the perfect appetizer as we welcome the arrival of tomato season. This dish is an excellent choice for gatherings, celebrating the fresh flavors of summer.
I was inspired to whip this up on a whim during a visit to the St. Lawrence Market in Toronto, where I stumbled upon the best burrata and some of the freshest produce imaginable. The quality of the ingredients made it impossible to resist creating something special, and the entire process took only about 10 minutes.
While tomato season in Ontario isn’t until late August/early September, it is easy to find delicious heirloom tomatoes throughout the summer. This is just another excuse to go to your local farmers market!
What I love most about this dish is its versatility. It can be easily customized to suit your taste. A drizzle of honey can introduce a lovely sweetness, while a sprinkle of toasted pine nuts adds a delightful crunch. You might even consider incorporating some sliced strawberries for a surprising and refreshing twist that complements the tomatoes beautifully.
As we dive into the heart of tomato season, I’m excited to explore more variations and share them with friends and family. This heirloom tomato dish is not only quick and easy to prepare but also a vibrant celebration of summer’s bounty. Whether you keep it classic or venture into creative territory with additional ingredients, it’s sure to impress and bring joy to any table.
